NIKE X TOM SACHS: NIKECRAFT SHOES

This past weekend of June 3rd, I was in NYC for the 2012 Footwear News Summit. I got a chance to check out the Tom Sachs MARS “Space Program” exhibit. After seeing the “Yard Shoe” and all the virals, I had to check it out in person.

The exhibit was being held at the Park Avenue Armory. This place is HUGE! One of the coolest things I noticed was that all the Nike employees there had on their complimentary Tom Sachs Yard Shoe. I was told that 400 of them were made and about 50 of them were seeded/gifted. I got a chance to speak to Tom’s personal photographer and she mentioned that this whole process; shoes and and all took about 3 years to put together. Aside from the exhibit, there was a pop up shop inside where visitors could purchase the shoes, bags, a trench coat and a bunch of random things that have also been seen Tom’s website.

The shoe is actually pretty dope if you ask me. “Special features include: outsoles borrowed from the NIKE special forces boot (SFB), vectran fabric from the Mars Excursion Rover airbags, and detailing from Apollo Lunar Overshoes. These premium athletic shoes thrive in the rugged terrain of the simulated Mars Yard in Pasadena, CA – as well as stealthily creeping the mission-funding hallways of headquarters in Washington, D.C.”

In the actual exhibit itself I noticed an astronaut locker room if you will; filled with goodies. Jordan x Nasa promo samples. Take a look below to check out the Air Jordan 1 Alpha and what looks like a few BCT Lows. I also spotted a few Nasa x Nike Dry Fit tees. I wanted to get my hands on a pair of the Yard Shoes so bad but that $385 price tag was a little too steep for me. By now I’m pretty sure they sold out.

Overall, I totally enjoyed this exhibit and Tom’s artwork. He’s very creative. S/O to the homie Mike for taking me.

Those mars yard shoes look very comfortable. I’m willing to spend my money to get those.
